Municipal Court
Pittsburg Municipal Court located at 200 Rusk Street, Pittsburg, TX, handles Class “C” misdemeanors only. Class “C” misdemeanors are punishable by a fine not to exceed $500.00. The maximum fine for most municipal court traffic violations is $200.00; for municipal court penal violations - $500.00; for certain city ordinance violations - $2,000.00; and for other city ordinance violations - $500.00.
The Municipal Court Judge is Steven Simmons who works out of the City Hall office on FRIDAYS ONLY from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. These are the ONLY HOURS that the judge will be available to meet with defendants who have been cited with a Class “C” charge. The visual indication that a defendant will need to come to City Hall to handle their charge, is a ticket which is written on PINK paper. The Deputy Court Clerks are Djuana Denmark and Jerri Sue Proffitt, who are available for defendants Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at City Hall.
All other colors of citations will be handled in other courts such as the Justice of Peace or “JP” court (located in the Camp County Courthouse) or the Department of Public Safety “DPS” (located across the street from the courthouse in the Annex building).
Juveniles (16 years or younger) are required to appear in open court with a parent or guardian (even if an attorney has been retained), to make a plea to the Municipal Court Judge. Juveniles who fail to appear or who fail to pay their fine will be reported to the Department of Public Safety, which will suspend their driver’s license. If the juvenile does not have a driver’s license, they will not be able to obtain one until they appear in court. Juveniles can also have an additional charge of Failure to Appear filed against them if they do not appear on their original court date.
The law requires that all individuals appear in court on their appointed court date in person or by mail (unless a juvenile). If you were issued a citation, your appearance date is noted on the citation. Individuals 17 and over, who do not wish to see the judge, can appear at the City Hall office during regular business hours.
After an individual has made their plea, there is a grace period of thirty (30) days in which the fine is to be paid in full, without additional charge. After 30 days, if the citation has not been paid in full, the State assesses a late fee of $25.00 (considered a payment plan fee). If that fee has been charged, the individual has additional time to pay the citation in full. All cases have the possibility of having warrants issued if not paid in full or disposed of in the manner agreed upon by the judge and/or individual. All cases have the possibility of being reported to DPS for the denial of (or the renewal) of driver’s licenses until paid.
