Roads to the Past
A trip though downtown Pittsburg shows we are proud of our heritage. Pittsburg is rich in unique historic buildings, turn-of-the-century homes, award winning museums with hands-on exhibits and demonstrations. The many historic markers throughout the city and county provide roadside history lessons from the time of the town's founding in 1854.
Historic churches in Pittsburg are reminders of a time when the church was the focus of the community.
St Beulah CME Church, a wood frame Gothic revival structure, was built in 1896; it has two bell towers, a balcony, and beautiful stained glass windows on three sides.
First United Methodist Church, first organized in 1857, is a brick prairie style church built in 1904. The Barckhoff pipe organ and stained glass windows are original to the building.
Reeves Chapel, a charming wood frame country church on FM 3326, was built in 1907. An historic cemetery is adjacent to the church.
Pitts Cemetery, this small cemetery just west of downtown is located near the home site of Pittsburg's founder, Major William Harrison Pitts. The cemetery has tombstones dating from the 1860s. Major Pitts is buried here.
Two other historic cemeteries are located in the city limits of Pittsburg. Many other cemeteries with marked graves dating from the 1850's are located throughout the county.
Historic Homes that showcase turn-of-the-century architecture are prevalent along Quitman, Jefferson, Texas, and Mount Pleasant streets.
